The UK produces over 434 million tonnes of waste every year. We are filling the equivalent of the Royal Albert Hall with waste every 2 hours. Most of our waste ends up in landfill. However this need not be the case, as we can recycle at least 50% of this waste.
By recycling we can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and save valuable materials and energy. For example, plastic film can be turned into garden furniture that doesn't rot, whilst recycling aluminium cans saves 95% of the energy needed to manufacture them from the raw materials. Recycling also creates employment. It is estimated that for every 100,000 tons of materials collected and sorted, approximately 241 jobs are created. This is ten times higher than other disposal alternatives.
Whether your household is serviced by Powys County Council's kerbside collection or by Cae Post's own rural collection, by putting out your glass bottles, cans, plastic bottles, cardboard and paper you are contributing to the social economy of north east Powys.
In addition, there are 70 bring sites around Powys. These sites are adopted by local community groups who benefit from payments made by Powys County Council for the tonnes of materials recycled through the sites.
By recycling through the community sector the local economy benefits through increased employment opportunities, and incomes generated stay in the local community.
Happy Recycling!
